  • In the much-anticipated debate with the Republican candidate Donald Trump, Biden struggled to defend his position and was seen as unstable. His lacklustre performance has sparked discussions within the Democratic Party on finding a suitable replacement to run for the elections of POTUS in November.
  • Michelle Obama, the former First Lady, Kamala Harris, the current Vice President and Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, are considered potential replacement candidates for Joe Biden.

Following the first presidential debate between President Biden and former President Donald Trump, there has been significant discussion about President Biden’s performance. Many believe he did poorly not only in presenting his stance but also in his behaviour. This has led to concerns about his suitability to lead the United States.

The debate, hosted by CNN, was dominated by Trump, who effectively presented his position and manifesto while criticising Biden. Biden struggled to defend his positions and was seen as unstable. This performance has sparked discussions within the Democratic Party about whether President Biden should be replaced as the candidate for the upcoming November presidential elections.

There is concern among Democrats and party donors that Biden’s poor performance could lead to a shift of votes from Democrats to Republicans. Some key decision-makers within the party, including figures like Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, are reportedly considering whether Biden should step down.

However, it is believed that President Biden would only leave the race if urged by his close family and inner circle. The challenge is finding a suitable replacement for Biden at this late stage, with only four months until the elections.

Several potential candidates are being discussed: Michelle Obama, the former First Lady, is seen as a favourite among Democrats and the liberal population of the United States. Despite some controversies during Barack Obama’s tenure, she remains popular and could potentially draw significant support.

Kamala Harris, the current Vice President, is influential within the Democratic Party. However, there are concerns about her ability to effectively present herself and articulate her positions.

Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, is also considered a potential replacement. He has a strong profile but, like other candidates, would have limited time to campaign and influence voters before the election. The key question is whether any new candidate could effectively swing votes back to the Democrats in such a short period. If President Biden remains the candidate, there is a risk that Republican support could increase, making it challenging for the Democrats to perform well in the upcoming elections.
