  • President Trump’s decision to send the Patriot missile system to Ukraine is much more than a sudden and symbolic policy shift.

The recent announcement from U.S President Donald Trump that the United States will send the Patriot air defence missiles to Ukraine represents an imperative policy shift coming from the White House. It reshapes the factors involved in not just the Russia-Ukraine war but also showcases careful diplomatic calculations of the U.S engagements with Europe and Russia. This decision of the US to send the Patriot defence missiles to Ukraine might have stemmed from US President Donald Trump’s overtly expressed exasperation with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s refusal to accept a peace deal.

A few weeks ago, the US decided to cut back on the weapons being provided to Ukraine, citing concerns over declining stockpiles for the US military. Certain weapons that were held off from being shipped to Ukraine by Trump’s administration were promised to Kyiv under Biden’s administration. This decision to withhold defence equipment to Ukraine shows a new set of priorities and interests under Trump’s administration.  The pause in critical weapons shipments was justified to be a shortage when Ukraine was battling Russia. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has raised concerns over how the pause in defence equipment shipments can significantly impact Ukraine’s defence system.

The Patriot weapon system is manufactured by the United States and used by some of its allies. It’s a long-range, all-altitude, all-weather air defence system that can be utilised to counter cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles and advanced aircraft. This particular missile can aid Ukraine in countering attacks being launched by the Russian forces. As Trump announced to send Ukraine new weapons, he also simultaneously threatened secondary sanctions on those buying Russian oil and sanctions on Russia, in case President Putin doesn’t agree to a peace deal within 50 days.

President Trump is thus using economic leverage to threaten Russia to terminate their “Special Military Operation” being conducted in Ukraine. It’s the usage of carefully devised economic warfare that the US is utilising to go into deeper waters with Russia, to bring the Russia-Ukraine conflict to termination. Trump, alongside NATO’s Secretary General Mark Rutte, stated from his Oval Office that weapons worth billions of dollars will be provided to Ukraine. Trump further stated that top weapons will be manufactured and sent to NATO. This statement comes shortly after the NATO allies agreed to increase their per-head contribution to NATO’s defence, respecting Article 5 of the Washington Treaty.

President Trump’s decision to send the Patriot missile system to Ukraine is much more than a sudden and symbolic policy shift. It represents the calculated decisions taken by the US, Europe’s responsibilities towards a conflict in its neighbourhood and NATO’s collective defence stance. Ukraine can now strategically plan to counter Russian air strikes with the Patriot Defence Missiles it will be receiving. Russia and Russian oil buyers, however, will have to strategically plan to counter the new wave of economic warfare being launched by the United States.
