In the last week of January, social media buzzed with viral content featuring India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demonstrating the digital payment system at a local roadside shop while enjoying a “cutting chai” with France’s President Emmanuel Macron, who was on his official visit as the chief guest for Indian Republic Day. Modi masterfully showcased India’s strengths and his key initiatives. Through this simple act, he conveyed two powerful messages: his commitment to supporting local products and the transformative reach of India’s digital payment systems, extending
even to small shops and households across the country.
Shortly after Macron visited India, UPI was officially launched at the Eiffel Tower during a grand Republic Day Reception. Prime Minister Modi highlighted this on social media platform X as an exemplar of digital payments promotion and bilateral relationship strengthening.
Moreover, this week marked the initiation of UPI in Sri Lanka and Mauritius, with Modi celebrating it as a significant milestone for the three nations. India’s UPI has rapidly become a cornerstone of digital payments within the country, transforming the way Indians transact. The recent expansion of UPI’s reach to countries like France, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Singapore, Nepal, and the UAE marks a significant milestone in India’s digital journey, showcasing not only the country’s technological prowess but also its emerging influence on the global stage.
This move is more than just a technical upgrade; it’s a testament to the potential of India’s digital infrastructure and its capacity to influence global financial transactions. At the heart of this expansion is the India Stack, a comprehensive suite of APIs that enables businesses, startups, and governments to utilize a unique digital infrastructure for everything from payments to identity verification. The India Stack has been pivotal in driving financial inclusion and digital access across India, turning the country into a case study for digital transformation. The global interest in UPI and the India Stack signals a recognition of India’s innovative approach to solving complex challenges at scale.
The international acceptance of UPI is not just a technological triumph but also a diplomatic victory. It underscores India’s growing influence in international forums and its ability to export technology solutions that have a wide-reaching impact. This move aligns with India’s broader foreign policy strategy, which seeks to establish the country as a global power through soft power, technological leadership, and multilateral cooperation.
The expansion of UPI’s global footprint is a strategic move that opens up new avenues for trade and tourism, facilitating smoother financial transactions for travellers and businesses. For instance, an Indian tourist in Paris or a Nepalese student in Bangalore can now transact seamlessly, thanks to UPI. This not only enhances the user experience but also fosters a sense of financial connectivity and inclusivity across borders. Moreover, the adoption of UPI by these countries is a testament to the trust and confidence in Indian technology standards. It showcases India’s capability to build world-class solutions that cater not just to its diverse population but also to international users. This is a significant leap towards establishing India as a leader in the global digital economy, providing a robust alternative to Western-dominated financial systems and technologies.
The journey of UPI from a national payment system to a globally recognised platform is filled with stories of innovation, collaboration, and resilience. It reflects the vision of a digital India, where technology empowers every citizen and creates opportunities beyond geographical boundaries. The inclusion of UPI in these countries serves as a bridge, connecting diverse cultures through the ease of digital transactions. This expansion also highlights the importance of international cooperation in the digital age. It shows how countries can come together to build a more interconnected and efficient global financial ecosystem. The acceptance of UPI globally is a step towards creating a more inclusive digital world, where transactions are not limited by national borders.
However, the global journey of UPI is not without challenges. Issues such as interoperability, security, and regulatory compliance are critical areas that require continuous attention and innovation. As UPI enters new markets, it must navigate the complex landscape of international financial regulations and security standards, ensuring that the platform remains robust, secure, and user-friendly. The internationalisation of UPI is a reflection of India’s rising soft power and its ability to influence global digital policies and practices. It is a clear indication that India is not just a participant in the global digital economy but is poised to lead and shape its future. The success of UPI abroad will likely encourage further innovation within India’s digital ecosystem, inspiring new technologies and platforms that can address global
challenges.
In conclusion, the global expansion of UPI is a landmark moment for India, showcasing its digital payment prowess and marking its emergence as a global power in technology and diplomacy. It is a story of how Indian innovation, backed by a strong vision and collaborative effort, is making a mark on the world stage. As UPI becomes a global facilitator of transactions, it carries with it the hopes and aspirations of a nation that is determined to lead through technology, innovation, and shared prosperity. This move not only benefits the immediate stakeholders but also sets a precedent for how technology can transcend borders, connect cultures, and empower economies worldwide, making the world a more connected and inclusive place. India while becoming Aatma Nirbhar Bharat, as per its grand vision is also rightfully on the path of becoming VishwaGuru.

The Modi government’s calculated move to take UPI global is certainly a great move to push the India stack. UPI is just the beginning as most other components of the India stack is yet to be explored and used by the world for its well-being. The author has wonderfully captured the essence of the UPI push to friendly countries.
Very well written article on the UPI adoption by other countries. Though UPI is useful for Indians in these countries and will boost tourism there, this cannot happen without PM Modi’s personal connect with the leaders of these countries.
Proud to be Indian and of such a thought – make in India make for the world. This is वासुदेव कुटुंबकम् 🙏
