China’s Power Play In the Garb of Economics: Xi Jinping’s Hanoi Sojourn and Vietnam’s Global Balancing Act

Though economic cooperation was the focal point, Xi aimed to align Hanoi with China's foreign policy vision, emphasizing a "global community of shared future." Vietnam, despite its "four nos" defence policy, seeks reassurances from Beijing regarding military ambitions, particularly in the South China Sea. The visit underscores the challenges and opportunities for Vietnam as it balances its relationships with major powers amid regional security concerns. Chinese leader Xi Jinping completed his two-day visit to Hanoi, focusing on enhancing ties with Communist counterparts. Xi Jinping’s US Visit: A Balancing Act for the US and a Face Saver for China

Xi's call for peaceful coexistence and being a "partner and friend" underscores China's recognition of the need for normal relations with the U.S. and the West. Facing a slowing economy and its first quarterly deficit in foreign direct investment, China aims to attract foreign investors. Biden's administration has agreed to resume military dialogues with China, a development welcomed for its potential to lower tensions. However, concerns persist about Chinese military behaviour, such as intercepts of U.S. ships and aircraft in international waters. Chinese President Xi Jinping's recent visit to the United States has garnered attention for several public relations successes. During a dinner in San Francisco, Xi received three standing ovations from the U.S. business co...

Quo Vadis Xi and PLA?

If one were to delve into the history of China until 1976, when Mao Zedong one of the greatest mass murderers of all time passed away, there is the story of the greatest human tragedies of modern contemporary history. However, all that changed in 1976 after Mao’s passing as China began a new path toward prosperity under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping who followed the principle of the “Peaceful rise of China” and Hide your strength, bide your time.” But to make a long story short, all that Changed under the present leadership of Xi Jinping who is using the People Liberation Army (PLA) as a continuation of his politics.  The book The Dragon’s Bite: Strategic Continuum and Chinese PLA’s Evolving Fire and Teeth written by retired Major General Rajiv Narayanan ...

Amidst great anticipation and under the shadow of intrigue, one of China's prominent political figures, Qin Gang, who had risen swiftly to become the foreign minister under the patronage of Xi Jinping, has suddenly been ousted from his position. The announcement of his removal was unexpectedly low-key, lacking in details, and was disseminated through a brief statement on the Xinhua wire service, subsequently echoed on the main evening TV news. Analysing President Macron’s Trip to China

It was not a surprise that China used Macron's visit and business agreements to further rifts inside Europe and those between the EU and the US.It would be difficult to see a significant improvement in China-EU relations if the EU leaders do not change their stance on the Ukraine war. The trip has certainly left Beijing assured that the two largest EU countries, France and Germany, are keen to keep economic exchange and political dialogue going. This week, French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen travelled to Beijing for an important meeting that could have a major impact on the strategic relationship between the world's two largest economies. European leaders have deepened their confrontation with China over human rights, highly sensi...

Huge Increase in China’s defence budget – What it means for India and the World

The world needs to be prepared for the long term and when China opts for military adventurism, countries like India, the US and Taiwan need to be prepared to take counter-measures.    ‘World-class military force’ at par with US armed forces by 2050 is the promise made by Chinese President Xi Jinping to his countrymen. To fulfil this ambitious goal, China has increased its defence budget. This is the eighth consecutive year that China has pushed its military budget to reach its ambitious goal. This time China hiked its defence budget from 1.45 trillion yuan to 1.55 trillion yuan, which is an increase of 7.2 per cent. Last year’s budget was increased by 7.1 per cent, marginally lower than this year’s hike. However, this consecutive hike in the defence budget looks different whe...

Revisiting China’s emergence – The lesser-known story of the rise of a global hegemon

The credit goes to the duo of Jiang Zemin and Zhu Rongji for navigating China during the challenging times despite the severe shortage of qualified human resources. The missing of China’s top business tycoons such as Jack Ma has raised alarm bells on the extent and gravity of Xi’s unprecedented crackdown. There is a determination in the CCP, not to let the Army get away from being their sword arm or their guardians in arms, as a robust safety valve. Despite their revulsion and hatred for the west, Chinese leaders were successful in the projection of a positivist, warm and welcoming image to the western world, by sublimating their stark differences, including their perspective, and cohesive hegemonic ambitions. The rise of China, as a global hegemon is apparent to everyone now. With ...

Japan and US will not stand by if Taiwan is attacked, former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe warns China

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said that his country will not idly standby if China and Beijing need to understand this and called out President Xi Jinping while speaking to the Taiwanese think tank, the Institute for National Policy Research. Abe was categorical when he said Japan and the United States could not idly stand by if China attacked Taiwan, as Chinese President Xi Jinping rachet tension over democratically ruled Taiwan and to have complete hegemony over the South China Sea and the Sea of Japan. Taiwan’s government is now in a constant state of alert and it has made it very clear that it will defend itself if needed even if the odds are overwhelming. Abe said, “The emergency in Taiwan is the emergency in Japan and Beijing, especially President Xi, mu...

CCP passes resolution cementing Xi Jinping’s status in its political history; Aims to establish Xi as equal to Mao and Deng

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has passed a resolution which seeks to cement Xi Jinping's status in its political history. The resolution, dubbed as 'historic' by the state media, is only the third of its kind since the founding of the party. The first was passed by Mao Zedong in 1945 and the second by Deng Xiaoping in 1981. The resolution passed on Thursday at the sixth plenary session aims to establish Mr Xi as an equal to party founder Mao Zedong and his successor Deng Xiaoping. The plenary session, one of CCP's most important political meetings, sets goals for the party and the country. The four-day closed door session gathered more than 370 full and alternate members of the party's 19th Central Committee - the country's top leadership. Earlier plenary sessions had set lo...
