Ceasefire in Gaza: Trump and Sisi Lead Push for a Fragile Peace

As the world watches closely, Israel and Hamas have agreed on a ceasefire after an intense war that began in October 2023. A peace summit was hosted by US President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Sharm el-Sheikh to address the long-running Israel and Gaza conflict. Over 20 world leaders, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, attended the summit. Under the Ceasefire deal, Hamas has released all the hostages to the Red Cross; news of their release brought tears and joy to the families.

Trump’s Role and Gaza Summit

The US President, Trump, mediated a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. He stated that the ceasefire deal has brought an end to a harrowing two-year war, and called it “the moment when everything began to change, and change profoundly for the better, in the Middle East.” He also praised Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu, describing him as a man of exceptional courage and patriotism. Trump further hailed the ceasefire as a triumph and thanked Arab and Muslim nations for their role in pressuring Hamas to release the hostages.

After addressing the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, Trump travelled to Egypt for a summit alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. More than 20 world leaders attended, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and leaders from France, Italy, Spain, the UK, and Pakistan.

The summit’s main objective was to coordinate aid for Gaza following the extensive destruction caused by the two-year war, which began on October 7^th 2023, when Hamas-led militants attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. The Summit came as Hamas released 20 living hostages and Israel began freeing hundreds of Palestinians from its prisons. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi stated that the summit aimed to “end the war” in Gaza and “usher in a new era of peace and regional stability.

Trust Remains Uncertain

While the ceasefire and hostage release marked a moment of relief, Hamas has refused to fully disarm. Questions also remain over who will govern Gaza in the post-conflict period, and trust between the parties remains fragile. Some families reported that only four out of 28 deceased bodies were returned on the first day, a delay that highlights ongoing problems in the process and persistent mistrust.
