The recent visit of Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Oman to India marks an important moment in the diplomatic ties between the two nations. This visit is particularly significant as it is Sultan Haitham’s first to India since taking office in January 2020. The historical background of Indo-Omani relations is enriched by pivotal agreements on trade, defence, and security, laying a robust foundation for collaboration.

Significance in the Region

Oman, India’s closest neighbour in the Arabian Gulf, plays a vital role in the geopolitical dynamics of the region. With strategic ports along the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, and Persian Gulf, Oman is a key player for India. Together with Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Oman forms a trio of crucial strategic partners for India in the Gulf.

Longstanding Ties

The enduring connection between the ruling family of Oman and India is built on mutual respect and cooperation. Sultan Qaboos’ positive stance towards India fostered economic projects and welcomed Indian professionals. People-to-people ties, bolstered by a sizable Indian community in Oman, contribute to the lasting friendship.

Oman’s Role in Promoting Peace

Amid a history of regional conflicts, Oman stands as a beacon of peace. Its foreign policy, marked by moderation and mediation, emphasizes deliberate neutrality in regional disputes. Oman played a key role in diffusing tensions between the United States and Iran during the 2019 Persian Gulf crisis.

Strategic Partnership and Defense Ties

The India-Oman strategic partnership, established in 2008, is built on mutual trust and shared interests. Defence and security cooperation, governed by a 2005 MoU, is exemplified by joint exercises involving all three branches of India’s defence forces. Oman’s participation in Operation Sankalp during the Persian Gulf crisis highlights the depth of security collaboration.

Economic Collaboration and Trade

Trade and commerce form a strong foundation, with bilateral trade reaching $12.388 billion in FY2022-23. Over 6,000 India-Oman joint ventures, with an investment exceeding $7.5 billion, showcase economic synergy. India’s position as the second-largest market for Oman’s crude oil exports underscores the vitality of economic ties.

Digital Initiatives and Future Prospects

The introduction of the Rupay debit card in Oman reflects India’s commitment to global digital infrastructure initiatives. The signed MoU on space cooperation opens doors for collaboration in strategic areas. The proposed India-Middle-East-Europe Connectivity Corridor and the potential gas pipeline project indicate a promising future for bilateral ties.

Oman: A Gateway to West Asia for India

Beyond bilateral relations, Oman holds a pivotal role in India’s broader outreach in West Asia. Its membership in key regional groups like the GCC, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Arab League underscores its importance. Oman’s adept management of regional dynamics aligns with India’s pursuit of stability and peace.

Conclusion

As India’s oldest strategic partner in the region and a close neighbour, Oman’s significance cannot be overstated. Sultan Haitham’s ongoing visit amid regional challenges emphasizes the enduring nature of this friendship. India views Oman not just as a diplomatic ally but as a gateway to West Asia, fostering peace, stability, and mutually beneficial collaborations.
