New Delhi’s Tatmadaw Conundrum

The military takeover in Myanmar has put New Delhi in a complex situation as its reluctance to condemn and disregard the military regime can be seen from different perspectives which is sacrosanct for India’s security challenges. Internal stability in Myanmar becomes an important factor as it is the only Southeast Asian country sharing a land border with India which makes it an important player in the smooth facilitation of India’s Act East Policy. Myanmar has not been able to come out of its 'Golden Triangle Trap’ (infamous drug-producing region) while New Delhi cannot remain fully mute with regard to the human rights issue in the neighbouring country. New Delhi can play an important role as the regional peacemaker by involving many like-minded countries to bring the different w...

Disturbed at the recent verdicts; efforts should be made by all sides to advance the path of dialogue: India

India has officially responded to the news about a special court in Myanmar’s capital sentencing Aung San Suu Kyi to four years in prison. In response to a media query, MEA's spokesperson Arndam Bagchi said that India is disturbed at the recent verdicts. "As a neighbouring democracy, India has been consistently supportive of the democratic transition in Myanmar. We believe that rule of law and the democratic process must be upheld", he said. Noting that any development that undermines the democratic process and accentuates differences is a matter of deep concern, the MEA spokesperson said that India hopes that keeping the nation's future in mind, efforts should be made by all sides to advance the path of dialogue. On Monday, a special court found Aung San Suu Kyi guilty of in...

Military coup in Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior politicians detained

Citing 'fraud in election', the Myanmar military has declared a state of emergency and has taken control of the country. The military conducted morning raids on several politicians and detained civilian government leaders including Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior government officials. Tensions were mounting between the political leadership and the military since the November elections in which the ruling party won by a landslide. A video address broadcast on Myawaddy TV, a military-owned television, said power had been handed to the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. The TV report said that the military-drafted constitution allows the military to take control in times of national emergency. The declaration of emergency and seizing power com...

Why is Bangladesh relocating Rohingya refugees to a Bay of Bengal Island now?

Summary: Bangladesh begins to relocate hundreds of Rohingya refugees to the island of Bhashan Char starting Thursday. UN and rights groups have objected to the move claiming that the island is low-lying and dangerous and is prone to cyclones and floods. The island of Bhashan Char covers an area of about 52 square kilometres. The Bangladesh Navy has built shelters there for at least 100,000 Rohingya refugees as well as a nine-foot (three-metre) embankment to prevent flooding.  Bangladesh says that overcrowding from the recent population boom at Bangladesh's Rohingya refugee camps has placed a strain on its infrastructure. The refugees lack access to services, education, food, clean water, and proper sanitation; they are also vulnerable to natural disasters and infectious disease tr...
