China criticizes US over Afghanistan but says willing to ‘deepen relations’ with the country under Taliban

China has heavily criticized the US over the Afghan situation and has demanded that the Biden administration halt its attacks on it. According to a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and blamed America’s “hasty” military withdrawal and the chaos resulting from Taliban’s capture of Kabul.

But at the same time the statement quoted the Foreign Minister saying that China is willing to conduct a dialogue with the U.S. to avoid a humanitarian disaster and stop Afghanistan from becoming a breeding ground for terrorism once again.

On the other hand, the Chinese government on Monday, 16 August, said they ‘welcome’ the chance to deepen ‘friendly and cooperative’ relations with the country. The statement came soon after the Taliban captured Kabul and occupied the Presidential Palace and the parliament without opposition.

The Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying as per an AFP report said: “The Taliban have repeatedly expressed their hope to develop good relations with China, and that they look forward to China’s participation in the reconstruction and development of Afghanistan.”

The Chinese government reportedly has also asked the Taliban to ‘ensure a smooth transition’ of power and stick to its promise to negotiate the establishment of an ‘open and inclusive Islamic government’. Further it has asked the Taliban to make sure that the Afghan and foreign citizens remain safe.
