COP28: Urgency Amid Challenges

Unfulfilled promises from COP27 further fuel concerns, with wealthy nations committing to a fund for climate disaster compensation, but progress remains sluggish.Developing countries, already facing the consequences of climate change they did not cause, approach the talks with scepticism. As the world watches COP28, genuine commitment and action are imperative to address the escalating climate crisis threatening our planet. The COP28 summit in the United Arab Emirates underscores the formidable challenges we confront in addressing climate change. Leaders from across the globe convene amidst a prevailing sense of disappointment, as rising emissions and unfulfilled commitments cast a shadow over the event. Despite the rhetoric on reducing pollution and transitioning away from fossi...

Global Biofuel Alliance: A Path to a Cleaner Future

The Global Biofuel Alliance would greatly benefit developing nations in reducing their carbon emissions and gradually transitioning to a more cost-effective, efficient, and cleaner means of energy. The Alliance focuses on securing a steady supply of biofuels—which are a cheaper and much cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels, and developing sustainable production methods. The Global Biofuel Alliance spearheaded by India, paves the way for other developing nations to join the efforts in combating climate change and bolstering equitable economic development. The G20 Summit provided a significant platform for India to portray its grandeur and accomplishments to the most powerful economies in the world. The 3-day summit successfully paved the way for several crucial dialogues ...

COP27 | Common But Differentiated Responsibilities on Focus

The two major international entities which serve as the enabler of climate finance are Global Environment Facility and the Green Climate Fund (GCF). The financial resources are needed to be invested in large-scale initiatives such as solar panels, and electric vehicles, soon, which are notably lacking in developing nations. The ambition fixed by the developed countries on climate finance needs a significant change from what they were at the time of the Paris Agreement in 2015. Developing countries' insistence on the new target by 2024 is simply making the rich vandals pay for their prior exploitation of the environment. Based on the principle of 'common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities’, it is fair for developing countries such as India to demand increas...

PM Modi calls for Food Security, Gender Equality and Investment in Clean Energy at G7 Summit in Germany

Speaking on the global food security, PM Narendra Modi laid out several goals for the top countries of the world. First, we must focus on the availability of fertilizers, and keep the value chains of fertilizers smooth at a global scale. We are trying to increase the production of fertilizers in India and seek cooperation from G7-countries in this regard, he said. Second, he said that India has immense agricultural manpower compared to the countries of the G7. Indian agricultural skills have helped give new life to traditional agricultural products like cheese and olive in some of the countries of the G7. He urged the G7 to create a structured system for the widespread use of Indian agricultural talent in its member countries. The World will be celebrating the International Year o...

India’s Arctic Policy takes shape with the aim to prepare the country to face challenges like climate change

The centre released its Arctic policy earlier this week with the title "India and the Arctic - Building a Partnership for Sustainable Development". The policy seeks to combat climate change and protect the environment in the region, which is warming three times faster than the rest of the world. The policy documents the history of India's relationship with the region, which can be traced back to February 1920. In February 2020, Government of India hosted the convention of migratory species under the United Nations Environmental programme conference of the parties ( UNEP -COP- 13) in Gujarat's capacity Gandhinagar. The aim of the convention was to strengthen India's scientific research and cooperation, climate and environmental protection, economic and human development, transportati...

India, China, Japan lose billions to extreme weather annually, says WMO report

Extreme weather events triggered by climate change cost Asia, especially India, China and Japan billions of dollars annually, which threatens sustainable development, DownToEarth reports quoting a World Meteorological Organization (WMO) report. Events such as tropical cyclones, floods and drought cause losses of at least $408 billion on an average every year in these three countries. China loses around $238 billion annually, followed by India ($87 billion) and Japan ($83 billion), according to the State of the Climate in Asia 2020 published by WMO. Their calculations on the most recent estimates were provided by the Asia Pacific Disaster Resilience Network. The highest annual economic loss (AAL) from climate-related hazards in Asia due to climate-related hazards are associated ...

UN scientists warn of “code red for humanity” over worsening global warming

The United Nations has warned of a “code red for humanity” as the earth is getting so hot that temperatures in about a decade will probably go past a level of warming that the world has sought to prevent. The startling revelations were made in a Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report by a team of scientists which was released on Monday. However, the scientists have allayed fears of absolute worst climate catastrophes. The IPCC report calls climate change clearly human-caused and “an established fact”. It also makes more precise and warmer forecasts for the 21st century than it did last time it was issued in 2013. The 3,000-plus-page report from 234 scientists said warming is already accelerating sea level rise and worsening extremes such as heat waves, droughts, fl...

India, US to partner for clean energy agenda; World leaders pledge to cut fossil fuel emissions at Leaders Summit on Climate

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced the launch of a joint climate and clean energy initiative with the United States to “mobilise investments, demonstrate clean technologies and enable green collaborations” in India that could also “create templates of sustainable development” for other developing countries. PM Modi, speaking at the Leaders Summit on Climate convened by US President Joe Biden on Thursday, underlined that India was already doing its part and that the country’s per capita carbon emissions are 60% lower than the global average. “We in India are doing our part. Our ambitious renewable energy target of 450 GW by 2030 shows our commitment. Despite our development challenges, we have taken many bold steps on clean energy, energy efficiency, a...

Creation of artificial lakes due to melting of glaciers a recipe for disaster, says research

The recent devastation in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand has once again warned us about the dangers of global warming. Such incidents occur in the Himalayas due to the breaking of glaciers or the breaking of walls of lakes formed by glaciers. The glaciers are continuously melting due to global warming, leading to creation of new lakes in the higher reaches of the Himalayas. There is also an increased risk due the breaking up or melting of the glaciers from the rising temperatures which can cause severe havoc in the lowlands. The researchers from The State Center for Climate Change under the State Council for Science Technology & Environment of the Government of Himachal Pradesh which is constantly studying these lakes have found that about 800 lakes have been formed in the...
